When choosing a product description writing service, here are 3 steps to follow to find the right service for your needs.
How exactly do you choose the best product description writing service for your business? There are a number of factors to keep in mind when you start your search. I’ve been writing product descriptions for business websites for a number of years, and here are the 3 steps I would recommend following when you’re choosing your freelance copywriter.
1. Ask for samples
If you come across a freelance writing service that looks like it could be a good bet, the first thing to do is ask the writer for some samples.
That doesn’t mean getting free samples of your own product descriptions, which many writers will be too busy to provide.
Rather, it means asking to see their existing product description samples.
Many writers will have a portfolio of samples where you can see work they have done for previous clients, so take a look over these. If you can’t see any, ask them for some.
If a writer has written product descriptions before, they should have at least a few samples that they can show you.
When you look over the samples, try to find some that look similar to what you are looking for. Product descriptions come in all shapes and sizes, from short 50-word descriptions to more detailed 400-word versions.
If they have any samples in your niche, such as food, fashion or tech product descriptions, that can also give you a good idea about whether they are a good fit for you.
2. Find out their process
Every experienced e-commerce freelance writer will have a process for creating product descriptions, so find out what this is.
My process is to find out as much as I can about your business and the products you are selling, then come up with a few initial descriptions so we can work out the right format for your descriptions and to ensure we are on the right page.
I will also ask for a deadline to complete your copy, and I can deliver in Excel, Word, Google Docs or whatever format you need. For large quantities of product copy, I will usually deliver in batches.
So ask your freelance writer how they work, the information they will need and how flexible they are. I try and be as flexible as possible to my clients’ needs rather than sticking to a process too rigidly, and I usually find that’s the best way to go about it.
3. Ask about price
Your budget is always going to be an issue, and although I cannot tell you what your budget should be, my advice would be to ensure you are getting value.
I write product descriptions in a wide range of formats and at different price points. For a very large batch of short, basic descriptions, I might charge as low as £2.50 each. But for a small selection of detailed product descriptions, I might charge £40 or more for each one.
It really depends on what you need. And while cheap product descriptions are often possible, make sure you know what you are getting. If you want a compelling description that engages the buyer and encourages them to become a customer, the copy will need more work. But if you just need to make sure your descriptions are unique for SEO purposes, that will be a much quicker job.
Find the best product description writing service
These are three of the most important factors to keep in mind when you are looking for a freelance writer to create product descriptions for your store. The final point to mention is that, if you cannot decide, hire a few writers to complete a small batch of product descriptions at an agreed price.
I’m always happy to write a few to start with so you can better decide whether I’m right for the job, so contact me and I’ll be happy to help.
